With the average cost of a UK wedding now at £25,000¹, newlyweds may be tempted to keep their feet firmly on home ground to manage costs after the big day. But they don’t have to go without a honeymoon, as a poll by last minute cottage provider, Snaptrip, has revealed that British holiday spots can feel just as romantic.
A poll of 1,000 Brits revealed that the Lake District (56%) takes the crown as the place most people would most like to go for a romantic break, followed by Cornwall (37%) and the Cotswolds (26%).
And we’re particularly keen on a romantic setting to get in the mood, with a lakefront or beach setting topping the list of romantic spots:
1. A lakefront (23%)
2. A beach (22%)
3. The countryside (21%)
4. A mountain (12%)
5. A city (10%)
So, you have the location and setting down, but what about the getaway itself? Brits revealed the top ten activities or features which make them feel the most romantic:
1. Romantic walk (47%)
2. A meal out (46%)
3. A romantic break (46%)
4. Log fire (39%)
5. Candles (27%)
6. A thoughtful/personalised gift (27%)
7. Flowers (24%)
8. Four poster bed (22%)
9. A meal in (22%)
10. Alcohol (21%)
Looking closely at what couples think the best aphrodisiacs are whilst on holiday in the UK, it seems men and women have different ideas – over half (53%) of men said a lake view is most likely to inspire romance, while women gave a sunset (48%) the top spot.

The independent survey of 1,040 UK adults, carried out February 2017 revealed:
